Shocking footage from Staffordshire Police’s drink-driving campaign exposes harrowing moments before a fatal crash that killed 62-year-old Cypriot Charalambos Nikolaou on Christmas Eve 2023.
The 29-year-old driver, Mark Plimer (aka Mark Mellor) from Blythe Bridge, had been pub-hopping in Tean and Stoke-on-Trent, downing shots while joking with staff.
Crash details
Around 7 p.m., Plimer drove over twice the speed limit on Uttoxeter Road in Draycott-in-the-Moors, lost control, and smashed into another vehicle.
Charalambos Nikolaou, visiting from Cyprus with his 17-year-old daughter for Christmas with relatives and university house-hunting, stood beside the hit car after dinner. He died instantly at the scene.
Two friends preparing to enter the vehicle suffered serious injuries.
Driver’s behaviour
Instead of helping, Plimer fled. Police found him hiding in bushes shortly after. He denied involvement, gave a false name, claimed innocence, and laughed mockingly at officers despite knowing he caused a death.
En route to custody, he taunted: “You have 24 hours to charge me. With a burned car, you have nothing,” laughing again.
Charges filed Christmas Day as Nikolaou’s family grappled with unimaginable loss.
Conviction and campaign
Extensive investigation led to conviction for causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Sentenced to 18 years in September 2024.
PC Jon Stant, key investigator, highlighted drink/drug driving’s devastation. Some drivers show remorse; Plimer showed none, believing he’d escape.
