Prisoners’ association: Every jail death cancels democracy

Date:

The Prisoners Rights Protection Association met with Justice Minister Konstantinos Fytiris, demanding immediate, drastic, and exceptional measures for the next six months to allow proper correctional policy.

Association President Alexandros Klerides stated the current prison situation is urgent and requires declaration as such with extraordinary actions.

Zero tolerance for deaths

The Association emphasizes zero tolerance for loss of life, stating “every death in Central Prisons cancels democracy itself.”

Christmas pardon expansion

They request horizontal implementation of the Presidential Christmas Pardon, extending beyond standard categories to benefit as many inmates as possible through sentence reductions.

This would advance prisoners through stages: from closed to open prison, open to electronic monitoring, and some releases, easing overcrowding.

Deportations for foreigners

Based on emergency measures, they urge immediate deportation of foreign inmates wishing to return to their countries without further delays.
