US readies Russia sanctions if Putin rejects Ukraine peace deal

Date:

New sanctions target Russian energy

The United States prepares a fresh round of sanctions against Russia’s energy sector to ramp up pressure on Moscow. Officials aim these measures at President Vladimir Putin if he rejects a peace deal with Ukraine, Bloomberg News reports today, citing sources familiar with the matter.

US authorities consider targeting ships from Russia’s shadow tanker fleet that transport Moscow’s oil, along with financial entities facilitating transactions.

Reuters cannot verify the information at this time. The White House and State Department did not immediately respond to comment requests.

Bloomberg notes that authorities could announce the measures this week.

Bessent discusses with European ambassadors

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the measure earlier this week during a meeting with European ambassadors, the news agency adds.

The Russian presidency, responding to questions about the report, stated it had not seen it but any sanctions would harm efforts to mend US-Russia relations.
