Cyprus and France to sign strategic partnership agreement

Date:

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides is meeting French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, where the two leaders are expected to sign a Cyprus France strategic partnership agreement aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.

The meeting will take place at the Élysée Palace at 11:00 local Cyprus time, according to a written statement issued on Sunday by Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

Focus on defence, economy and EU coordination

During their talks, Presidents Christodoulides and Macron will discuss the priorities of Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, as well as key international and regional developments.

Discussions will take place within the framework of shared European positions and the need to maintain unity and resilience within the European Union, the spokesman said.

Strategic partnership agreement at centre of visit

The main purpose of the visit, however, is the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Cyprus and France. The agreement aims to strengthen, structure and institutionally upgrade bilateral relations through a clearly defined framework of cooperation.

Key areas covered include defence, the economy, cultural cooperation, innovation and education, as well as enhanced coordination on European and international issues.

According to the government spokesman, the agreement reflects the shared determination of both countries to move from strategic convergence to strategic implementation, through a more structured, operational and targeted partnership.

Cyprus positioned as EU partner and regional stabiliser

The agreement is also expected to reinforce Cyprus’s role as a reliable partner within the European Union and as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Particular emphasis is placed on security, energy resilience and European cohesion, areas where Cyprus and France seek closer cooperation amid evolving regional challenges.

High-level delegation accompanies president

President Christodoulides is accompanied in Paris by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, as well as senior government officials.
