Proposal of flashing lights on speed camera vans

Date:

The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation submitted a bill to parliament that mandates illuminated signage on vehicles carrying mobile speed cameras.

The proposal amends Article 12 of the existing law. It requires every van deploying a mobile photo-marking device to display an activated roof-mounted flashing light.

Aims of the proposal

Lawmakers designed the change to boost road safety and eliminate risks identified in current practice. It also ensures speed checks operate transparently, preventing perceptions of revenue-raising tactics.

The explanatory note stresses that visible cameras play a vital role in accident prevention and smooth enforcement. The reform corrects distortions that sparked insecurity and public backlash without weakening photo-marking’s role against serious traffic violations.

Transparency and trust

Movement president Stavros Papadouris tabled the bill. He underlined that transparency in enforcement builds credibility and effectiveness.

He called for serious, evidence-based discussions on improving the photo-marking framework while respecting citizens.

The Ecologists continue pushing substantive reforms that strengthen safety, public trust, and accessibility of state policies through clear positions and concrete solutions.
