Cyprus is gaining ground on the academic map of Eastern Europe, achieving strong results in the latest academic ranking performance measured by Webometrics. The University of Cyprus secured 23rd place, while TEPAK rose to 94th, marking a notable improvement in international visibility and research impact.

Based on Google Scholar citation data from January 2025, the Webometrics Ranking highlights Cyprus as one of the fastest-growing academic hubs in the wider region. The University of Cyprus recorded an impressive 825,666 citations, placing it alongside historic European institutions and ahead of dozens of larger universities in Eastern Europe. TEPAK, with 316,222 citations, continues its upward trajectory, while the European University of Cyprus, Frederick University and the Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics also appear in the list.

Greek universities dominate the top positions

Greece demonstrates exceptional performance in the ranking, with five of the six top institutions originating from the country. Among nearly 800 universities assessed across Eastern Europe, two Greek institutions claim the first two places:

  1. National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) – 4,864,139 citations
  2. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) – 2,182,896 citations
  3. University of Patras – 1,476,112 citations
  4. National Technical University of Athens (NTUA / ΕΜΠ) – 1,346,248 citations
  5. University of Crete – 1,308,661 citations

Two additional Greek universities rank within the top 15: the University of Thessaly (11th) with 1,134,957 citations and the University of Ioannina (13th) with 1,054,433.

The latest results confirm a growing regional footprint for Cypriot research institutions, signalling strengthened international recognition and continued progress in Cyprus academic ranking metrics.
