US embassy in Kyiv closed amid warning of major Russian airstrike

Date:

The US Embassy in Kyiv has received information indicating that Russia may launch a significant airstrike today and will remain closed as a result, according to the US State Department’s Consular Affairs service.

“For security reasons, the embassy will remain closed, and employees have been instructed to seek shelter within the embassy,” the service noted in a statement posted on the US Embassy’s website.

“The US Embassy advises American citizens to be prepared to go to shelters immediately if an air raid alert is issued,” the statement added.

The warning follows Ukraine’s use of US-supplied ATACMS missiles to strike targets on Russian soil for the first time, with authorisation granted by the outgoing Biden administration on the 1,000th day of the war with Russia.

Moscow has been warning the West for months that if Washington allows Kyiv to use American, British, and French missiles against targets deep within Russian territory, these NATO member states would be considered directly involved in the war in Ukraine.
