British Museum hopeful for Parthenon marbles agreement

Date:

British Museum chairman George Osborne has expressed optimism about the prospect of a future agreement with Greece regarding the Parthenon marbles, despite acknowledging that the issue remains one of the most challenging in the institution’s history. Speaking to the Sunday Times, the former UK chancellor said he believes a mutually acceptable solution is possible if both sides approach the matter with openness.

Osborne noted that the debate surrounding the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures has been a defining question for the museum for two centuries. “I’ve always said this is the most intractable problem the Museum has had for 200 years,” he told the paper. “So you have to be a little humble when you turn up and say you’re going to solve it. But I remain pretty optimistic.”

He added that progress would depend on constructive engagement from both London and Athens. “If everyone approaches this with an open mind, there is room for an arrangement that meets the entirely understandable expectations of the Greek state as well as our own requirements and laws,” he said.

Osborne hinted that such an agreement could involve a framework allowing important pieces to travel, noting with some significance: “If we get it right, we’ll have some great objects coming here.”

While no formal agreement about the Parthenon marbles has been reached, his comments suggest continued momentum in long-running discussions over the future of the sculptures, which have been housed at the British Museum since the early 19th century.
