78-year-old injured in Nicosia apartment blaze

Fire in building under renovation

Shortly before 21:40 on Sunday night, a fire started in a small first-floor apartment of a three-storey building in Nicosia that was being renovated into student accommodation.

Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis reported extensive damage to the flat and smoke damage to the second floor after a window pane broke.

The sole occupant, a 78-year-old man, escaped with burns. Paramedics gave him first aid at the scene before transferring him to hospital.

No other injuries were reported.
