UCY among top institutions in 8 subject fields for 2024

Date:

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy announced the results of the 2024 Global Rankings of Academic Subjects, placing the University of Cyprus among the top institutions in eight scientific fields. These include Automation & Control, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Psychology, Environmental Science & Engineering, Political Sciences, Physics, Computer Science & Engineering, and Clinical Medicine.

A press release from the University of Cyprus noted that, as of August 2024, according to the Shanghai global rankings, the University of Cyprus was the only Cypriot university ranked among the top 701–800 universities worldwide.

“The ranking by subject highlights the University of Cyprus’s ongoing efforts to achieve recognition in the global research and teaching landscape of higher education. Excellence, quality teaching, and impactful research remain non-negotiable values for the country’s first public university,” the release stated.

It was added that inclusion in prestigious rankings underscores the university’s vast potential for international recognition and boosts its standing in advocating for necessary legislation to enable its development. These include offering undergraduate programmes in foreign languages and establishing and operating university clinics.

Methodologically, university rankings are conducted across five scientific categories (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences) and 55 academic fields. To be ranked by subject, a university must meet a minimum number of publications during the evaluation period. This threshold ranges from 25 (e.g. aerospace engineering, communications, public administration) to 200 publications (e.g., physics, biology, chemistry, clinical medicine).

The Global Rankings of Academic Subjects are based on four key factors assessing universities’ academic and research performance: quality and quantity of publications, international influence and recognition, awards and distinctions, and world-class researchers and research excellence.

Publication analyses are conducted using a model that assigns weighted averages to indicators, calculating the overall score for each subject and university.
