Conservation works on the Church of Agios Sozomenos in Davlos, Karpasia peninsula have been successfully completed.
The project brought together Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot archaeologists and conservators in close cooperation. The European Union provided the funding, while the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) offered technical supervision.
The legend of the church
The small church stands about two miles east of Davlos village, close to the sea.
Local tradition says the icon of Saint Sozomenos was discovered on rocks visible in front of the church. Builders first tried to erect the church on the exact spot where the icon was found, but every morning they returned to find the previous day’s work mysteriously destroyed.
This continued until one builder dreamed that Saint Sozomenos told him the church should be built on the plateau above the rocks instead. The builders followed the saint’s instruction in the dream and moved the construction site to its present elevated location, where the building finally stood firm.
