Foreign Minister: International borders cannot be redrawn by force

Date:

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos stated on Wednesday that internationally recognised borders cannot be redrawn by force. He made the remark at the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting on developments in the Ukraine conflict.

Participation in emergency EU video conference

According to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement, Mr Kombos took part in the FAC’s emergency video conference. The session focused solely on recent developments in ongoing peace efforts for Ukraine, including ways for the EU to provide further support.

The Council underlined that no sustainable peace can exist without Ukraine’s active, substantive, and free participation at the negotiating table. It emphasised that any peace effort must fully respect international law, particularly the principles of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The EU’s active involvement remains an essential element, the announcement added.

Progress noted in recent meetings

In his intervention, Mr Kombos noted that progress appears to have occurred in recent meetings in Geneva and Abu Dhabi, based on the FAC briefing. A framework is taking shape, and the Council requires continuous updates on all developments.

Mr Kombos also highlighted the importance of cooperation with the United States, stating that American involvement serves as a decisive factor in advancing peace efforts. He stressed that any peace plan must have Ukraine’s consent, as no agreement can prove sustainable without its support and participation. The EU’s security interests must form part of the discussions.

In closing, the Foreign Minister reiterated that internationally recognised borders cannot be altered or redrawn by force. He added that peace should not merely halt hostilities but pursue a lasting solution that prevents future aggression.
