Romania deploys fighters after overnight drone violations

Date:

Romania reported two new drone incursions into its airspace early Tuesday and sent fighter jets up in response, after a night of massive Russian strikes on neighbouring Ukraine.

The Ministry of Defence said the first drone crossed into Romanian airspace from Valkove in Ukraine toward Chilia Veche in Tulcea county. Two German Eurofighter Typhoons took off from the Mihail Kogălniceanu air base at 06:28 to assess the situation.

At 07:11, the jets picked up a radar contact with the target over Ukrainian territory, outside Romanian airspace, according to the ministry.

About 20 minutes later, two Romanian F-16 Fighting Falcons launched from Borcea, after radar systems detected a second drone in Galați county. The ministry said it is closely monitoring developments.

Neighbouring Moldova also confirmed a Shahed-type drone crossed into its territory this morning. The state border police said the aircraft moved toward Vinogradovca–Vulcănești and then crossed into Romania, adding that authorities in Bucharest received immediate notification.

Romania scrambled four fighter jets last week after another drone incursion.
