Merz and Trump align on next steps for Ukraine peace plan

Date:

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on the next steps regarding the American peace proposal for Ukraine, following a phone call held today.

Merz said on X that he had a productive and confidential discussion with the U.S. president about the peace plan for Ukraine. He explained that they reached agreement on how to proceed and added that he will now brief Europe’s partners so that further steps can be coordinated.

According to a spokesperson for the German government, the two leaders spoke for fifteen minutes about the U.S. plan, which aims to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

The peace plan is expected to dominate conversations on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg this weekend, where the leaders of Europe’s most powerful states will attend. This comes despite Trump’s boycott of the summit, as the United States announced late on Thursday that it will not take part in the official G20 discussions in South Africa.
