Major Paphos wildfire gradually brought under control

Date:

A major fire that ignited on Sunday, 23 November in the wider area of Kathikas, Akoursos, Koili and Stroumpi has now come under increasing control after intense, prolonged efforts. The blaze spread quickly through wild shrubland and deep ravines, making ground access extremely difficult and triggering a large-scale mobilisation. Firefighting forces from every district joined the response, supported by specialised teams, earthmovers and multiple aircraft. Civil Defence and Police remained on alert for a potential evacuation of nearby communities.

At its peak, the fire covered around one square kilometre and scorched approximately 75 hectares. According to the latest update, spokesperson Andreas Kettis confirmed that there is no active front, only small hotspots. He stressed that Cyprus will not need external assistance to complete the operation.

“The situation is clearly improved. Firefighting forces worked throughout the night,” Mr Kettis stated on Χ. An unmanned aircraft with a thermal camera surveyed the area to detect hotspots, which teams then extinguished. He noted ongoing flare-ups in ravines, where crews are still working. At first light, two aircraft and a helicopter began further water drops.

All units remain on site to secure the area and prevent reignition. Forces from the Fire Service, the Department of Forests and the Game and Fauna Service are continuing operations. The cause of the fire will be examined at a later stage.
