New 5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Cyprus

Date:

Another earthquake was felt across Cyprus on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the initial estimates, the tremor measured 5.3 on the Richter scale, with an epicentre similar to that of the morning quake in the Paphos district, and was felt throughout the island.

The shock was also reportedly felt in various areas of Cyprus, as well as in parts of Turkey and Lebanon.

A 3.5 magnitude aftershock was recorded shortly afterwards.

The Director of the Geological Survey Department, Christodoulos Hadjigeorgiou, confirmed to CNA that a new earthquake had occurred, estimated to be around magnitude 5, but said that further study was needed to determine its precise size.

Earlier in the morning, an earthquake measuring 5.3 had been recorded, with a focal depth of 15 kilometres, centred near Agia Marina Kelokedaron in the Paphos district.

When asked whether the latest tremor was stronger than the morning one, Mr Hadjigeorgiou replied that “we don’t yet know; it is likely to be slightly weaker.”

“There has been a sequence of tremors and aftershocks since the morning, which must be studied,” he added. He noted that further seismic activity is expected and that the phenomenon is being closely monitored by the Seismological Centre of the Geological Survey Department.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, more than 12 aftershocks have been recorded since the morning, ranging from 2.2 to 4.1 magnitude.
