President: ATA framework formed and accepted by unions

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday that following Friday’s meeting with the two ministers responsible for ATA, a framework has been shaped that appears to be accepted by the trade unions.

“I had a very productive meeting yesterday with the heads of employers’ organisations, where of course we discussed the framework. We expect their final decisions within the next 24 hours,” the president said in response to journalists’ questions at the inauguration of the University of Athens’ Cyprus (Nicosia) branch.

He added that broader economic issues were also discussed, including “very important proposals, and I am pleased because the employers’ organisations support the government’s tax reform- a reform that aims to strengthen the middle class, support families, and for the first time, substantially assist Cypriot businesses. We now await the final decisions.”

Asked when he would meet the unions, Christodoulides said he would be seeing them later today.

When asked if a decision would be made immediately or if further meetings would follow, he replied: “As things stand, I don’t think there will be more meetings. We are just waiting for the final decisions from the employers’ organisations.”

Responding to another question, he stressed that the issue is not related to any government reshuffle.

“I’ve read the fantasies of some about a supposed link between the two- they are completely unrelated,” he concluded.
