The deputy director of secondary education, Giorgos Koutsidis, has urged an end to racist behaviour in schools following a fight between two students at a secondary school in Paphos.
Speaking to CNA, Koutsidis stressed that “we must stop these racist attitudes and fears that we carry”, describing the school fight as isolated. He added that no other issues had been reported since the start of the new school year.
“We hope these isolated incidents stop,” he continued, “but we are in a position to deal with them immediately.”
Koutsidis emphasised that the safety and well-being of students remains the ministry’s top priority.
The altercation, which took place on Tuesday morning during break time, involved two minors aged 15 and 13 at a public secondary school in Paphos. The Paphos central police station is investigating the case.
According to CNA sources, tension between the two students had first arisen about six weeks ago, with no further incidents occurring until this week’s confrontation. School management has been given instructions on how to handle the matter.
