Tom Hanks’ typewriter collection to feature in exhibition

Date:

Thirty-five typewriters from the famed collection of Academy Award-winning actor, director, and producer Tom Hanks will be displayed for the first time at the “Some of Tom’s Typewriters” exhibition in Sag Harbor, on the eastern tip of Long Island.

As stated by the exhibition curator and author Simon Doonan, “Tom Hanks’ remarkable typewriter collection will captivate visitors of all ages.”

The exhibition opens on 11 January 2025, at the Church Sag Harbor, an organisation founded by artists April Gornik and Eric Fischl, which focuses on exploring the “life of objects” by organising events centred around material culture, such as bicycles and guitars.

“Fischl reached out to Tom Hanks—via mutual friends—regarding the exhibition after watching the actor’s 2016 film ‘California Typewriter’,” said executive director Sheri Pasquarella via email.

Hanks acquired his first typewriter from a friend who decided to purchase a newer electronic Olivetti model. Two years later, when Hanks took it for servicing, he was advised it wasn’t worth repairing. He left the workshop with a new model and a newfound perspective. “That guy changed my outlook on the role a typewriter can play in one’s life,” Hanks told NPR.

Even today, Hanks uses typewriters for thank-you notes, memos, and to-do lists, according to Artnet.
