Strong earthquake in the Philippines triggers tsunami warning

A strong earthquake in the Philippines measuring between 7.2 and 7.4 magnitude struck off the coast of eastern Davao early Friday, according to initial estimates from both the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) issued an alert for “hazardous” tsunami waves that could affect coastal areas within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.

The earthquake in the Philippines occurred at an estimated depth of 62 kilometres, according to the EMSC. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, but authorities warned residents to stay alert and move away from coastal areas as a precaution.
