Greek Cypriot jailed for four years in British Bases over 1g of meth

Date:

A Greek Cypriot jailed for four years by the British Bases court in Dhekelia was found guilty of drug possession with intent to supply, despite initially being caught with only one gram of crystal methamphetamine.

According to the SBA Police, the 52-year-old man from Xylofagou was sentenced on 2 October by the Dhekelia Senior Judge after pleading guilty to Class A and Class B drug charges.

He had been arrested near his village (within the Dhekelia SBA area) on 6 May while already wanted for similar offences. Though the initial charge concerned the possession of just one gram of meth, forensic analysis of his mobile phone revealed extensive evidence of drug supply, leading to much more serious charges and a lengthy prison term.

Chief Inspector Fanos Christodoulou praised the work of the Community Action Team, noting that the strength of the evidence forced the accused to change his plea from “not guilty” to “guilty.”

“We should be proud of the sentence handed down by the court, as it sends a clear message about how seriously such crimes are treated,” he said.
“Even though one gram of methamphetamine may not sound like a large quantity, investigators linked him to supply offences, and he will now be behind bars for a long time.”

Christodoulou added that the successful conviction was thanks to the meticulous work of the police officers who built a watertight case against him.
