Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will deliver a Cyprus UN speech on Wednesday at the plenary of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. His address is scheduled for 14:00 local time (21:00 Cyprus time).
In a post on X, the president said his remarks will underline “the importance, in this critical geopolitical juncture, of the multilateral system, collective responsibility and cooperation.”
According to the Presidency, the Cyprus UN speech will also set out the Republic’s positions on current challenges, stress Cyprus’ regional and European initiatives, and highlight the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Christodoulides is expected to address efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and to call for the reunification of the island. He will emphasise the goal of achieving a free, secure, strong and prosperous Cyprus for all citizens.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Multiple UN-led negotiation rounds have failed to reach a settlement, with the last attempt at Crans-Montana in 2017 ending without agreement.
