Gyzi shooting incident: 59-year-old fires at sanitation worker

Date:

A shocking video has surfaced showing the moment a 59-year-old man raised a gun and opened fire at a sanitation worker in the Athens district of Gyzi. The footage, published by CNN Greece, captures the worker climbing onto a garbage truck when the suspect appears from behind a red car, wearing a blue shirt.

The man points his gun at the worker from a distance. At first, the weapon jams, but the shooter reloads and then fires- narrowly missing the sanitation employee.

Shooting in broad daylight

The Gyzi shooting incident took place on Monday, 8 September 2025, in a narrow street of the neighbourhood. The gunfire caused panic among both municipal workers and passers-by.

When questioned, the 59-year-old claimed he was disturbed by the noise of the garbage truck.

Weapons cache found at home

Police later searched the suspect’s residence and discovered an arsenal of weapons, including:

  • a revolver with four cartridges
  • a pistol
  • three knives
  • two brass knuckles
  • 14 bullets
  • two full-face masks

The suspect was taken into custody and referred to the public prosecutor.
