Dozens of leading polar experts have warned that Arctic climate engineering is a dangerous distraction from the urgent need to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The controversial “geoengineering” proposals include thickening Arctic sea ice with pumped seawater or releasing reflective aerosols into the atmosphere to cool the planet. While such ideas are often framed as potential tools to fight global warming, researchers say they could cause severe environmental damage and increase geopolitical tensions in fragile polar regions.
A new assessment, published in Frontiers in Science, reviewed five of the most widely discussed polar geoengineering proposals. None met basic criteria for feasibility or safety. One scheme would require around 10 million seawater pumps to cover just 10% of the Arctic — a scale scientists describe as unrealistic.
Professor Martin Siegert of the University of Exeter, lead author of the review, warned: “These projects risk distracting from the only proven solution to climate change — cutting emissions to reach net zero.”
Supporters argue more research could inform future decisions, but most scientists stress that Arctic climate engineering must never be seen as a substitute for decarbonisation.
