Update: Dog that attacked girl in Phini held in private facility

Date:

The dog that attacked a two-year-old girl at the waterfalls in Phini is being kept in a private holding facility, police confirmed on Monday.

According to police spokesman Kyriakos Theodorou, the dog will today be examined by veterinary services to confirm its breed and assess its level of danger. Speaking to CyBC, he said the animal attacked the child after escaping its owner’s attention. It was not on a leash at the time.

The dog is microchipped and registered as an American Staffordshire Terrier- a breed with shared ancestry and many similarities to the Pit Bull.

The 24-year-old owner, who was arrested on Sunday, is expected to be questioned further and charged in writing later today.

The young girl remains in Nicosia General Hospital, where she is being treated for multiple lacerations to her legs. Her condition is stable and out of danger, and her wounds have been stitched.
