London blocks Israeli officials from major defence summit

Date:

London blocks Israeli officials from attending the upcoming Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) summit, according to Politico. The British government’s decision is directly tied to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

Despite the exclusion of officials, Israeli defence companies will still take part in the DSEI exhibition, one of the world’s largest defence industry events. Their presence is expected to trigger mass demonstrations outside the venue.

An exhibition spokesperson criticised the “wrong choice” by the Israeli government to escalate military operations in Gaza. They called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and increased humanitarian aid to the enclave.

Wider diplomatic tensions

The move that saw London block Israeli officials also comes in the wake of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement that the United Kingdom intends to formally recognise a Palestinian state in September.

According to The Times, Israel is weighing possible retaliation, including the option of restricting its long-standing defence cooperation with London.

“Britain has a lot to lose if Israel decides to respond,” one diplomatic source warned.

The fact that London blocks Israeli officials while still allowing defence companies to exhibit underscores the delicate balance the UK is attempting: applying political pressure over the Gaza war while maintaining industry ties.
