Free nursery school fees from September for ages 3–4.5

Date:

Nursery school fees will be abolished in Cyprus from 1 September for children aged three to four and a half, Education Minister Athina Michaelidou has announced. The measure aims to encourage attendance at public nurseries and ease the financial burden on families.

Speaking on the decision, Michaelidou said the removal of nursery school fees aligns with the government’s goal to provide high-quality, accessible, and free preschool education for all children, without exclusions.

The cabinet has also approved the continued operation of the public nursery school in the occupied village of Kormakitis, where two children will be enrolled this year.

In relation to talent repatriation, Michaelidou announced three new education-related measures designed to support Cypriots returning from abroad.

Specifically, access to Greek language lessons will now be extended to partners of repatriated talents through the ministry’s training centres. In addition, free Greek lessons will be provided to both partners and children via state training institutes.

Finally, the annual grant provided to repatriated talents to support their children’s attendance at private schools will increase. For secondary education, the grant will rise from €768 to €1,000. The eligibility criteria have also been updated, reducing the required years of permanent residence abroad from ten to seven.
