Weapons and ammunition found in rubbish bin in Kaisariani

Weapons and ammunition were discovered in the early hours of Tuesday in a rubbish bin in Kaisariani, Athens.

Shortly before 2am, a passer-by found the cache on Riga Feraiou Street and immediately alerted the police. A unit from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department was dispatched to the scene to carry out further investigations.

Among the items discovered were a variety of World War II weapon components, as well as more recent equipment. These included two corroded grenade release levers, a defensive hand grenade, various oxidised parts of weapons, cartridges of different calibres, two knuckledusters, a pair of handcuffs, two expandable batons and fourteen religious icons.

In an official statement, the Hellenic Police (ELAS) confirmed:

“In the early morning hours today, the Immediate Action Centre was informed of the discovery of weapons and ammunition in a rubbish bin in Kaisariani.

At the scene, officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department and police dog handlers conducted a search, during which the following items were found and confiscated:
• Two corroded grenade release levers
• A defensive-type explosive hand grenade with detonator
• Ten corroded mortar shells
• Various oxidised mortar components
• Ammunition of various calibres
• A disassembled handgun
• Various corroded weapon parts from World War II
• Three oxidised revolver frames
• An iron submachine gun frame from World War II
• Various cartridge holders
• Bolt carriers from various World War II weapons
• A machine gun frame
• Two knuckledusters
• One pair of handcuffs
• Two expandable batons
• Fourteen Christian religious icons.”

An investigation is being conducted by the Athens Police Directorate for the Suppression and Investigation of Crimes.
