Dangerous gel toys withdrawn from Cyprus market

Date:

Dangerous gel toys posing serious health risks to children have been identified and removed from the Cyprus market, the Consumer Protection Service (CPS) has announced.

The CPS reported its findings to the European Safety Gate RAPEX system after detecting chemical hazards in two gel toy products. Specifically, the “Happy Bear” gel toy, model 22-03192 (barcode: 5290666957410), of unknown origin, was found to contain dangerously high levels of boron. According to the service, ingestion or prolonged contact with high levels of boron may harm children’s health, particularly their reproductive system.

The product was found at MIKAEL TRADING CO. LTD and has been withdrawn from the market to protect public health.

A second product, a gel toy under the “SUPER COLOR” brand (barcode: 6991205095288), also of unknown origin and containing the same chemical risks, was discovered at KOSTAKIS D. KOUREAS & SON LTD. This toy has also been removed from circulation.

The Consumer Protection Service has published the list of all products under its jurisdiction reported to the European RAPEX system during the week beginning 11 August 2025 (RAPEX – Report 33). The full list can be found in the announcement

“Unsafe products reported to the Safety Gate RAPEX system – 19.08.2025”.

Due to the possibility that these or similar products may still be available on the Cyprus market, the CPS has launched intensified inspections to identify any remaining stock.
