The coordinated efforts to tackle illegal employment and unregistered labour in Cyprus continued yesterday, with a joint inspection operation carried out by the Police and the Inspection Service of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance in Larnaca.
The inspection took place at 9:30am on Tuesday at a construction site for a new apartment building in the Larnaca district. During the operation, seven individuals — all third-country nationals — were arrested after being found working illegally on the site without permits from the relevant authorities. Further checks revealed that two of the individuals were residing in Cyprus unlawfully.
Authorities are now investigating the seven suspects for illegal employment, while three employers are also under investigation for hiring workers illegally. One of the employers was present at the construction site and was arrested on the spot by police. The other two were summoned and appeared at the local police station.
The operation involved officers from the Aliens and Immigration Unit (Larnaca District Division), members of the Green Line Surveillance and Migration Flow Management Sub-Directorate, and inspectors from the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance.
Labour inspectors identified several violations of the legislation concerning undeclared work and issued eight administrative fine notices, totalling €41,050.
