Three elderly patients hospitalised with severe heatstroke

Date:

Three elderly individuals have been hospitalised with severe heatstroke at Nicosia General Hospital, as the prolonged heatwave continues to pose a significant health risk, particularly to vulnerable populations. The information was confirmed on Thursday by the spokesperson for the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), Charalambos Charilaou, speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

According to Mr Charilaou, the patients include a 72-year-old man and two women aged 73 and 90. All three were transferred from their homes with serious symptoms of heatstroke. While their condition is described as serious but stable, their doctors report gradual improvement.

Surge in emergency cases due to extreme heat

Mr Charilaou also noted that the Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) across public hospitals have experienced an increased number of patients over the past several days. Many have presented with heat-related illnesses, such as thermal exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn.

Most cases involve elderly individuals, who are treated and discharged with medical guidance. The health authorities have issued urgent recommendations for the public to take precautionary measures during the ongoing heatwave.

Mr Charilaou urged the public to avoid sun exposure, stay well hydrated, and seek medical advice immediately if symptoms of heat-related illness appear.
