A €19 million Larnaca sustainable mobility project has been officially launched, following the signing of the construction contract on Wednesday at the Public Works Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
The contract, awarded to Araco Construction Cy Ltd, was signed by Public Works Director Eleftherios Eleftheriou on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and company representative Mohammed Rokaya. The winning bid totalled €18.34 million (excluding VAT), with works expected to begin in September 2025 and conclude by January 2027, over a 16-month period.
Funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and national resources, the project forms part of Larnaca’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and aims to promote public transport and multimodal connectivity between key urban areas. It will also enhance road safety, accessibility, and quality of life, while supporting long-term economic and environmental sustainability.
Key features of the Larnaca sustainable mobility project include:
- Reconstruction of road surfaces and the creation of dedicated bus lanes with modern bus stop infrastructure.
- Construction of cycle lanes both on roads and pavements, using clear signage, coloured surfaces, and physical separators such as kerbs and flexible bollards.
- Upgrades to pedestrian infrastructure including new and refurbished pavements, zebra crossings, Pelican crossings, and cyclist-friendly crossings.
- Installation and enhancement of traffic lights, horizontal and vertical signage, and guide signs.
- Supporting infrastructure for drainage, road lighting, green space irrigation, sewage, and water supply systems.
