Cyprus Commissioner presents anti-sexism initiatives at global forum

Date:

Cyprus’s Gender Equality Commissioner, Josie Christodoulou, informed the Global Forum – Women Leaders in Reykjavik of measures Cyprus is implementing to combat misinformation and fake news targeting women through sexist attacks, which often aim to silence them.

A statement from the Commissioner’s office noted that Ms. Christodoulou was one of three speakers on a panel discussing “Realities, Trust, and Democracy: New Strategies for a New Era.”

She highlighted Cyprus’s approach to addressing sexist attacks, emphasising the importance of a law criminalising such behaviours as a primary tool.

The Commissioner also stressed the need for partnerships with media, tech companies, and civil society to foster cultural change.

Furthermore, she underscored the importance of equal access and participation for women and men in technology and artificial intelligence, contributing to creating a gender-equitable online space.

During the forum, the Commissioner discussed the role of multilateralism in promoting gender equality and enhancing women’s participation in diplomacy with the OSCE’s Senior Gender Adviser, Lara Scarpitta, and Iceland’s Special Gender Envoy, Edda Jökulsdóttir.
