US experts investigate suspected arson in Limassol fire

Date:

The first outbreak of the wildfire in the Limassol mountains is being treated as a suspected criminal act by a team of American experts.

The 10-member team of US specialists was invited by the government to carry out an investigation, evaluation, and provide recommendations. According to SigmaLive information, the team will arrive in Cyprus tomorrow.

Speaking on state radio, Deputy Government Spokesman Yiannis Antoniou said the US experts already have their own data, including information from American satellites.

The team’s first report, he said, will serve as a starting point for further investigation.

The President of the Republic, Mr Antoniou noted, considered it necessary to have a more objective and reliable investigation carried out by specialists with the expertise, experience, and equipment required. He approached the US team last week, before receiving reports from the various services.

“It is important,” he said, “to know exactly what happened so that we can prevent it from happening again in the future.”

The 10-member team will remain in Cyprus for 10 days. They will present their initial findings and then submit a written report within a few days.

This will be followed by the second stage of the process, concerning wildfire management and citizen evacuation.

In response to a question, the Deputy Spokesman said that the issue of political responsibility has not been closed.
