71-year-old sentenced to 10 months over fatal road collision

A 71-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after being found guilty of causing a fatal road collision that took place on 1 April 2023 in Limassol.

The deadly accident occurred at around 4:50am, when the then 71-year-old driver struck and fatally injured 52-year-old Chrysostomos Chrysostomou. The victim had been on foot near the pavement on Omonoias Avenue, intending to cross the road.

The Limassol District Court found the 71-year-old guilty of causing the fatal road collision and today handed down a 10-month prison sentence. He was also given eight penalty points and disqualified from driving for three months following his release from prison.

According to case details, the driver had entered a side road in the opposite lane of traffic under circumstances still being investigated by the police. There, he struck the victim, who was within the road near the pavement intending to cross Omonoias Avenue.

The 52-year-old was taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
