The Medlink undersea electricity cable project, which connects renewable energy production zones in Tunisia and Algeria to northern Italy, is among the cross-border initiatives eligible for funding through the “Connecting Europe Facility”.
This is confirmed by the delegated act through which the European Commission finalised the list of 13 cross-border green energy projects that qualify for special status, making them eligible for grants for studies or construction under the Connecting Europe Facility.
Medlink includes the development of approximately 10 gigawatts of renewable energy in Algeria and Tunisia, generating 30 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year for local use and export, as well as 4 GW of new electricity capacity to Europe via the undersea cable (landing in northern Italy).
Other projects on the updated list include two wind farms in Latvia (in partnership with Lithuania and Estonia), a green district heating initiative between Germany and Poland, and a feasibility study on offshore renewable energy potential between Portugal and Luxembourg.
The European Commission is expected to launch the call for proposals in the coming weeks.
