A 48-hour strike by the 120 employees of the company Larnaca Public Transport (LPT) began at 05:30 this morning, with workers gathered at the Larnaca bus station.
In a statement by the unions OMEPEGE-SEK, SEGDA-MELIN-PEO and DEE EMPORIKON DEOK, it is mentioned that the industrial action is taking place “as provided by the Industrial Relations Code, following a breach of the Collective Agreement, which was officially confirmed by the Department of Labour Relations of the Ministry of Labour.”
It is added that the “blatant” breach, as described by the unions, “concerns the agreed working hours of 38 hours per week (7 hours and 36 minutes daily). At a meeting held on Tuesday 29 July at the Ministry of Labour, the negotiating committee gave a final deadline until the evening to comply, and in the event of non-implementation of the agreed terms, the employees would proceed with a 48-hour strike from Wednesday 30 July,” the statement notes.
According to the announcement, “the unions will defend the Collective Agreements and the agreed terms by all legal means, and ask for the public’s understanding for any inconvenience caused” and they call “on the company Larnaca Public Transport Services and Operations Ltd to respect the collective agreement and implement what has been agreed.”
