The government has announced immediate wildfire support measures for communities affected by the devastating blaze in mountainous and semi-mountainous Limassol.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, speaking on Thursday from the Presidential Palace, outlined a first set of emergency wildfire support measures:
- Direct financial support to community councils to cover urgent needs
- Full restoration of damaged properties
- Temporary housing and support for victims’ essential living needs
He expressed the state’s deep sorrow over the “unjust loss of two of our fellow citizens,” describing the ongoing situation as “unprecedented.”
Letymbiotis confirmed that both ground and aerial firefighting crews are operating on three active fronts and that Cyprus has requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
As of Wednesday, aircraft from the United Kingdom and two from Jordan have been operating in Cyprus. An additional two aircraft from Jordan have since arrived, with further reinforcements en route from Egypt, Israel, and Spain.
