A total of 16 communities without power amid raging wildfires

Date:

A massive wildfire broke out on Wednesday, sweeping across the southern slopes of the Troodos mountains north of Limassol. The blaze has tragically claimed two lives—their bodies were discovered in a burned-out vehicle—and has forced hundreds of residents to evacuate, with around 106 people now accommodated in temporary shelters or hotels.

The fire has razed approximately 100 km² of land, including forests and rural communities, and destroyed dozens of homes in villages such as Souni‑Zanatzia and Lofou. Lofou alone saw about 20 houses burn, while Souni‑Zanatzia was described as a “burnt village” where the entire forest and many homes were lost.

In addition to the human and structural toll, 16 communities are currently without electricity, with fire-damaged power lines and substations making restoration difficult amid ongoing risks.

Authorities, supported by international aid from Spain, Jordan, and the UK, continue firefighting operations—deploying crews and aerial units—to control flare-ups amid extreme heat and strong winds.
