Fines for hosepipe use explained: how to wash your car legally

Date:

Authorities have clarified how hosepipe fines will be issued in Cyprus, following confusion around water restrictions and their enforcement. Speaking to Mesimeri & Kati, Gianna Oikonomidou, Senior Executive Engineer at the Water Development Department, outlined the fines, penalties and rules now in effect.

Hosepipe fines and enforcement process

In the case of a court conviction, the penalties can now reach €1,000 and/or three months’ imprisonment depending on the severity of the offence.

However, fixed penalty notices are the usual route:

  • €75 for a first offence
  • €150 for repeat offences within 18 months

The responsible authorities for issuing fines include the local Water Supply Boards and the EOA. Inspections will be carried out regularly, and on-the-spot fines may be delivered immediately. If a person refuses to accept the fine, legal proceedings may follow.

Washing your car legally

What about washing vehicles under the current water restrictions?

According to Oikonomidou, washing cars with a bucket is still permitted. Alternatively, people can use professional car washes that employ modern water recycling systems. Hosepipes, however, remain restricted under the current conservation measures.

The aim is to curb water wastage during the summer period, especially in light of ongoing drought concerns. Authorities are calling on the public to be mindful of their consumption and follow the guidelines in place.
