13-year-old caught driving in Limassol with baby on board

Date:

Police in Limassol pulled over a car on Thursday afternoon and were stunned to discover that the driver was a 13-year-old boy, with his 22-year-old sister in the passenger seat and a 9-month-old baby in her arms.

The vehicle was stopped on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue, where officers from the local traffic unit noticed something suspicious. Upon inspection, they found the teenager behind the wheel, his adult sister beside him, and the infant- all without seatbelts.

Police escorted all three to the local station, where the owner of the car- the children’s father- was summoned for questioning.

Both the father and the 22-year-old were formally charged in writing, while the 13-year-old faces no criminal liability due to his age.

The baby, reportedly the child of another sister, was being held unrestrained in the front passenger seat.

Police have not disclosed why the 13-year-old was driving or how long the group had been on the road. The incident has sparked concern over child safety, parental responsibility, and the potential consequences of unlicensed driving.

Authorities have reiterated that children under 18 are not permitted to operate a vehicle under any circumstances, and that all passengers- especially infants- must be appropriately secured.

An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
