Iran hypersonic missiles fired amid ongoing conflict

Date:

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced early Wednesday that it had launched Iran hypersonic missiles towards Israel during the sixth night of armed conflict between the two regional rivals.

According to a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, the IRGC said it carried out the “eleventh wave” of missile strikes as part of Operation Honest Promise 3, using Fattah-1 medium-range hypersonic ballistic missiles. The statement added that Tehran now claims “full control of the airspace over the occupied territories.”

The launch marks the latest escalation in a rapidly intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel. While claims about airspace control could not be independently verified, the use of hypersonic weapons represents a significant military development.

What is the Fattah-1 missile?

The Fattah hypersonic missile was first unveiled by Iran in June 2023. According to Iranian authorities at the time, the weapon has a range of 1,400km and can reach speeds of up to Mach 15. Its design includes a movable secondary nozzle and solid fuel propellants, reportedly allowing for high manoeuvrability inside and outside the atmosphere.

The exact size of Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal is unclear, but it is widely considered one of the largest and most advanced in the region.

Iran’s military leadership has previously stated that no existing missile defence system- including Israel’s Iron Dome- would be capable of intercepting the Fattah due to its unpredictable flight path and high speed.

While Western analysts have expressed scepticism about some of these claims, hypersonic weapons are widely seen as a next-generation threat due to their ability to bypass conventional radar and interception systems.

This marks the first known operational use of Iran’s hypersonic missile in active conflict.
