Russian strike on Kyiv kills 14

Date:

A devastating overnight Russian strike on Kyiv has killed 14 people and injured at least 55 others, in what Ukrainian officials describe as the deadliest attack on the capital in weeks.

Air raid sirens blared from late Monday into the early hours of Tuesday, with residents enduring a night of fear and destruction. Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed that more than 40 of the wounded were taken to hospital, and emergency services remain on the scene.

One of the victims was a 62-year-old American citizen, who was killed when a missile hit a building across from where medics were assisting others. Footage from the scene shows apartment blocks with charred facades, rubble-strewn streets, and destroyed vehicles.

According to Ukraine’s interior ministry, 27 locations in Kyiv were targeted. The city’s infrastructure sustained heavy damage, including homes and civilian sites.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that more than 440 drones and 32 missiles were launched across Ukraine overnight. While Kyiv was among the hardest-hit, other regions also reported strikes.

Mayor Klitschko warned that the death toll could rise, as rescuers continue to search through collapsed structures. “We hope that no dead will be found under the rubble, but we cannot rule it out,” he said.

This latest Russian strike on Kyiv comes amid rising tensions on the international stage. In a related development, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu arrived in North Korea on a “special mission” to meet Kim Jong Un, reinforcing military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Meanwhile, criticism is mounting over the United States’ cautious approach to military aid under President Trump, who has urged European allies to shoulder more responsibility for supporting Ukraine’s defence.
