Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, India

Date:

An Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has shocked India and drawn international concern, as authorities confirm the aircraft went down shortly after take-off near the city’s airport. The flight, bound for Gatwick Airport in London, was carrying more than 240 passengers and crew.

The crash occurred in a densely populated urban area, according to police in Gujarat state. While no official death toll has been confirmed, images from the scene show burning wreckage and thick black smoke rising near the airport. Footage also shows injured passengers being carried away on stretchers and loaded into ambulances.

“We are currently verifying the details and will provide further information in due course,” Air India said in a brief statement on X.

Conflicting reports on number of passengers

Indian authorities are still working to verify the total number of passengers. The ANI news agency, citing Gujarat Police, reported that 242 people were on board, including crew. However, CNN News18 placed the number at 220 passengers and 12 crew.

Local television stations reported that the crash happened during take-off, and images suggest the aircraft failed to gain altitude before crashing in a built-up area. Emergency services are on the scene, and the Indian civil aviation authority has launched an investigation.

The incident is likely to raise serious questions about air safety and infrastructure, especially given the high-profile nature of an international flight headed to the UK.

This is a developing story.
