Cyprus artificial intelligence EU policy and vision

Date:

Cyprus is ready to contribute to the development of Artificial Intelligence technologies in Europe, Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemos Damianou, said on Friday at the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council in Luxembourg.

Speaking ahead of a discussion on AI investment and the creation of AI Gigafactories in Europe, Damianou highlighted Cyprus’s commitment to the initiative. “Cyprus is ready to engage and participate through our active research and innovation community, our engineering talent, and our strong global and regional collaborations,” he said.

“We envision a balanced, well-governed framework that protects EU sovereignty while encouraging global investment through public–private partnerships that will future-proof Europe’s AI capabilities,” he added.

On the broader agenda of strengthening Europe’s digital resilience, Damianou emphasised the importance of reliable connectivity. “Connectivity is the digital backbone of Europe. We must ensure it remains strong, secure and robust — from submarine cables to satellite communications and upcoming 6G networks,” he noted.

He reiterated Cyprus’s support for accelerating the IRIS² satellite programme, calling it a cornerstone of Europe’s technological autonomy. He also welcomed discussions on the blueprint recommendation for cyber crisis management, describing it as a “timely conversation” that will help ensure Europe’s preparedness against large-scale cyber threats.

Referring to the MED9 Digital Ministerial held the previous day, Damianou said the participating countries had reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the digital transition, with a focus on AI innovation and emerging technologies to address shared challenges.

Finally, Damianou confirmed that Cyprus co-signed a joint initiative led by France, Greece, Spain, Denmark, and Slovenia on protecting minors online. “This is a shared responsibility,” he said, “to safeguard the younger generation in an increasingly complex digital world.”
