Cyprus’s Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, departed for Luxembourg to participate in the meetings of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, which will take place on June 12 and 13.
A statement from the Ministry of Justice said that the agenda includes important issues such as the regulation on the protection of adults, access to data for law enforcement purposes, the European Strategy for internal security, and the overall situation in the Schengen area, with a focus on areas such as strengthening the resilience of the EU’s external borders and accelerating the digitization of procedures and systems.
During discussions on Schengen-related matters, the Minister will have the opportunity to refer to the actions of the Republic of Cyprus, aiming for readiness for accession to the Schengen area in 2026.
On the sidelines of the Council, Hartsiotis will hold significant bilateral meetings, including with Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath, with Eurojust President Michael Schmid, and with European counterparts.
The Minister will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry and is expected to return to Cyprus on Saturday, June 14.
