Fire Service issues precautionary measures ahead of severe weather

Date:

Due to impending extreme weather conditions with heavy rainfall, as forecasted by the Meteorological Service, the Fire Service is advising Local Authorities, municipalities, communities, and all relevant government services to take preventative action. This includes clearing storm drains, sewers, and rivers of debris, waste, or dense vegetation, and generally taking necessary steps to monitor and act within their areas of responsibility.

Additionally, the Fire Service recommends the following precautions for citizens:

  1. Ensure that storm drains outside your home are not blocked.
  2. Check that home gutters are functioning correctly.
  3. If you have water pumps in basements or semi-basement spaces, ensure they are operational and capable of removing sufficient stormwater.
  4. Seal any openings in fences, especially if your property is adjacent to open land below street level.
  5. Secure temporary shelters with metal sheets or makeshift structures.
  6. Firmly secure gas cylinders and oil tanks for domestic or other uses.
  7. Ensure water tanks and solar water heaters are securely fastened.
  8. Remove any temporary constructions or materials from rooftops.
  9. Scaffolding on construction sites should be firmly secured.
  10. Advertisements and signage should be firmly anchored.

During extreme weather events, the public is advised to limit unnecessary travel and follow the guidance and advice of the relevant Authorities.
