Crete: Newborn found in bin after home birth

Date:

Authorities in Crete are investigating a shocking incident in which a young woman gave birth at home and allegedly discarded her newborn in a rubbish bin near her residence in Nea Alikarnassos, Heraklion.

The incident came to light when the woman’s partner returned home and found her covered in blood. He immediately called emergency services.

According to reports from Creta24, paramedics quickly realised the woman had recently given birth—but the newborn was nowhere to be found. In a state of confusion, the woman was unable to explain where the baby was.

What followed were frantic, dramatic moments as paramedics searched the house and surrounding area. One rescuer eventually discovered the newborn alive, placed inside a plastic bag in a bin just outside the couple’s home.

The baby was immediately rushed to hospital, where it was found to be conscious. The mother was also hospitalised, and police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities have not yet released further details, but the case has shocked the local community and raised broader questions about support for new and expectant mothers in crisis.
