Lady’s Mile: Swimming warning remains as Bases await test results

Date:

Authorities in the British Bases have reiterated their call for the public to avoid swimming at Lady’s Mile beach, as they await new water quality results following recent concerns.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Bases confirmed that additional samples were collected and that test results are expected by the end of the week. Until then, they are urging the public to stay out of the water as a precaution.

They stressed that they have been working closely with the Republic of Cyprus from the outset, aiming to reach a “shared understanding of the situation as soon as possible” to avoid confusion and safeguard public health.

The Bases noted that variations in results can arise from differing methods, sample times, or collection points. While Cyprus used the 48-hour membrane filtration method, the Bases also employed the Enterolert method, which produces results in 18 hours. Both are conducted at their ISO-accredited international laboratory.

Officials confirmed they are under a legal obligation to inform the public if any evidence suggests poor water quality. They also reiterated their commitment to identifying the source of the issue and emphasised that public health and safety remain the top priority.

While swimming is currently discouraged, the beach itself remains open. The public is encouraged to enjoy the natural beauty and visit the restaurants along Lady’s Mile and the broader Akrotiri Peninsula.
