Cyprus Archbishop confident of ongoing ties with new pope

Date:

The Archbishop of Cyprus George expressed his certainty that cooperation with the Roman Catholic Church will continue. Responding to journalists’ questions about the future contacts of the Church of Cyprus, after the election of a new Pope, while attending an event on the occasion of Mother’s Day in Nicosia, the Archbishop said “we are confident that we will continue the cooperation, because for us what matters is the institution and not the person who represents it.”

He also said that the two churches will continue to cooperate and the dialogue under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will progress, “so that in a world dominated by other religions, we Christians can give a message of unity,” he noted.

Responding to a question about a meeting that was expected to have with the late Pope Francis, Archbishop George said that new procedures will be initiated to schedule a meeting with the new Pope Leo. “We will definitely visit Rome, we will invite him (the Pope) to visit Cyprus and I am sure that we will continue that process,” he said.
